5 Horrifying Holiday Haunts

As we enter the creepiest time of the year with Halloween just around the corner, embrace the fun, enjoy a scare and head to one of these 5 horrifying holiday haunts with your InsuraTrip Travel Insurance!

(1) New Orleans, USA

As it’s said, New Orleans is one of the most haunted cities in America. So, head to the bright lights of Bourbon street for the frightening festivities if you dare!

New Orleans dresses itself up for Halloween and puts on a fantastic parade with three dimensional props and floats and offers an over the top celebration starting from early until late. If you’re in town for a few days, once the parade is over, head to The Endless Night Vampire Ball at the House of Blues. With its super strict themed dress code, it’s like you’re entering another world.

If you’re taking the little ones with you on your trip, instead, head to the family friendly Ghosts in the Oaks event in the City Park. There’s amusements, trick-or-treating, arts and crafts and even pumpkin carving!

Perfect for your Halloween break.

(2) London, England

Jack the Ripper Tour, The London Dungeon, Tower of London and many other spooky goings on are just a handful of reasons why a visit to London is a ‘must-do’ this Halloween!

Embark on a seriously scary ghost hunt around some of London’s notorious haunts such as the Old Queen’s Head pub in Angel; the Islington hang out is said to be haunted by both a lady and a weeping little girl.

If you fancy a touch of glam to our ghoulish getaway, book a room in The Langham, Marylebone; Europe’s first Grand Hotel which opened in 1865 where it is rumoured that in room 333 there is a hub of paranormal activity and there has been reported sightings of ghosts roaming the corridors.

(3) Salem, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Back in 1692 Salem held the most famous witch trials in the world, and some of that history can still be seen there today. A popular tourist destination, Salem has plenty to offer tourists wanting a Spooktacular time whilst in town!

If you’re looking for things to do whilst in Salem for Halloween, and perhaps nearby Boston, it’s worth checking out the following attractions:

  • The History and Hauntings of Salem Walking Tour – Learn about the mysterious 400 years of history of Salem.
  • The Salem Witch Trials Memorial – Pay your respects to those that died during the Salem Witch Trials and learn a little more about the subject
  • Crow Haven Corner – Crow Haven Corner is one of America’s oldest ‘witch shops’ and is packed with mystical going-on’s such as tarot readings, crystals, spell books candles and much more. If the kids are fans of harry potter, they’ll love this!

And no trip is complete without a visit to the Salem Witch Museum!

(4) Riviera Maya, Mexico

Day of the dead festivities are often held in Mexico City but if you want to tie in a beach break on your trip, then head to Cancun where they celebrate by holding their own day of the dead festival.

Day of the dead traditions go as far back as 3,000 years where families celebrated the lives of their deceased ancestors and as the years continue, more and more Mexican towns and cities are involving themselves in these celebrations.

Cancun is one of these. Cancun holds its own festival called Festival del Dia de Muertos ‘Cena de Animas’, or Day of the Dead ‘Dinner of Souls’. The festival sees over 400 different artists performing across the city.

If you're after something a little more inclusive, head just a little further down the road to Playa Del Carmen where the Xcaret Eco Park hosts a number of different activities to celebrate. Xcaret Eco Park even has its own hotel within the grounds, so you won't have to travel far to be apart of the action.

(5) Prague, Czech Republic

The beautiful Gothic City of Prague is the perfect place to spend Halloween. Especially if you’re looking for a getaway not too far from the UK!

While Halloween isn’t a holiday associated with Prague, it is rich in history and stunning architecture.

Some of the best Halloween attractions in Prague include the famous Old Jewish Cemetery, the Torture Museum, Charles Bridge and the charming Old Town side of Prague which is the setting of many ghoulish tales!

The ideal spot if you’re looking to jet off on a Halloween Holiday.
